Close Encounters of the Coup Kind: Tales from the Art Leadership Trenches

by Laura Henkel PhD

In the dynamic realm of arts and culture, my steadfast belief in collective success has consistently guided my approach to leadership. I’ve always been driven by the notion that when one person succeeds, we all rise together. This philosophy forms the cornerstone of my leadership style, wherein I prioritize empowering every member of my team for success, understanding fully that their achievements not only benefit our clients but also enrich the broader cultural community we serve.

Over the years, as I’ve welcomed new members into our fold, my focus has been on fostering an environment of empowerment, ownership, and shared purpose. However, navigating the vibrant tapestry of arts and culture landscapes has not been without its challenges. I’ve encountered instances where certain team members, enticed by the allure of immediate gratification, have sought to undermine our collective efforts. In such moments, I’ve found myself at a crossroads, caught between steadfast supporters who believe in our shared vision and those easily swayed by the promises of short-term gains.

These internal struggles haven’t just been disruptive; they’ve had tangible repercussions for our clients and the cultural initiatives we champion. I vividly recall instances where projects were derailed, partnerships strained, and trust shattered—all due to individuals prioritizing personal gain over our collective mission.

One particularly memorable case involved a new team member who managed to captivate one of our key partners with flashy promises and slick presentations. Despite my reservations, their influence grew, resulting in costly missteps and a breakdown in communication. It took considerable effort to rebuild trust and salvage our client relationships—a process that underscored the critical importance of discerning who truly has our clients’ best interests at heart.

Through these trials, I’ve gleaned a valuable lesson: success in the realm of arts and culture transcends individual accolades—it’s about nurturing trust, fostering collaboration, and upholding integrity within our teams and with our clients. It’s about prioritizing the long-term sustainability and enduring impact of our cultural endeavors over the allure of short-term gains or personal agendas.

As Tupac astutely remarked, “Just because you lost me as a friend doesn’t mean you gained me as an enemy.” This sentiment rings particularly true in the world of arts and culture, where surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals who share our values and commitment to the greater good is paramount. It’s through such alliances that we can authentically rise together, creating a lasting impact that reverberates throughout the cultural landscape.

In essence, staying true to our core values and aligning ourselves with individuals who share our ethos ensures not only our success but also the enduring relevance and impact of our endeavors in the rich tapestry of arts and culture.
